Anonymous Stamps, Coins & Banknotes British Coins and Costumes 1958 British Coins and Costumes 1958 25 - This is an interesting set which details the history of British money from the ring money of the ancient Celts to the George II shilling, but as well as picturing the coins we also see an example of the type of dress worn in the period. So for instance we see a Roman coin of Augustus and a citizen in his toga or an Edward IV angel coin accompanied by a man in a suit of armour. Among the interesting coins is a William and Mary shilling which pictures both heads on the coin and a Cromwell sixpence which is extremely rare. The numbered backs give a brief write up about the coin. This set was also produced with an advert for “Mills Filtertips” on the back issued by Amalgamated Tobacco. The cards are size 68 x 36mm.

Anonymous Flowers and the Garden Cacti 1965 Cacti 1965 25 - This set contains colour drawings of different types of cacti with guidance on how to grow them, country of origin, details of flowers etc. on the numbered backs. For instance the Selenicereus Glandiflorus is described as the finest of all cacti and named the “Queen of the Night” because the lovely flower opens towards sunset and the Echinofossulo Cactus Crispatus was apparently “fairly recently discovered”. This set was also issued by Amalgamated Tobacco in 1961 and by Lamberts Tea in 1962. It is fascinating how many different varieties of the plant are available and this set certainly does them all justice. Cards size 68 x 36mm.

Anonymous Military & Armed Forces British Uniforms of the 19th Century Blue back c1965 British Uniforms of the 19th Century Blue back c1965 25 - Whilst the 19th century saw great industrial and scientific innovations it is best remembered for the growth of the British Empire and by the end of this century Queen Victoria ruled over a vast area on which the sun never set. All this was only possible however due to her army who in the early years were taking on and subsequently defeating the French army under Napoleon and by the end were engaged in various conflicts in South Africa. This set pictures some of the uniforms worn by regiments over the century. All are drawn in colour against pastel backgrounds. Sadly there is no background information on the reverse, but the excellent pictures go some way to make up for this. This set was also produced by Amalgamated Tob in 1957, Direct Tea c1960, United Dairies in 1962, S. Prior in 1965 and Horsleys Stores in 1968. Cards size 67 x 36mm

Anonymous Football Football Clubs and Badges c1960 Football Clubs and Badges c1960 25 - The colour pictures on the front show badges on or alongside a football with the team shirt in the background and the name of the club and team colours written top and bottom respectively. Included are West Bromwich Albion which was founded in 1879, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Burnley, Arsenal, Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle United, Preston North End, Manchester City, Wolves, Portsmouth, Chelsea, Sunderland and Everton. There is interesting information about the teams on the reverse. For instance the Manchester United card mentions the club had recently lost players in the Munich air crash and the card for Manchester City informs us they were originally known as Ardwick. This set was also issued with Lamberts Tea in 1958 and by Francis c1965. Ideal for anyone with an interest in football the cards are size 68 x 36mm.

We learn, for instance, that the Douglas X-3 is the most fantastic of all U.S. research aircraft and is designed to fly at three times the speed of sound. Also included in the set are an R.A.F. Meteor, Lockheed F.940 Starfire, Avro Canada, Bell H-13D helicopter as used in Korea, the French Vautour, De Havilland Vampire and Venom, Saab Lansen, an Alitalia Convairliner 340 passenger aircraft, a Westland-Sikorsky Whirlwind and Bristol 173 Rotocoach helicopters, Short Sew Mew etc. Cards size 68 x 36mm. Anonymous Birds, Butterflies & Moths Budgerigars 1957 Budgerigars 1957 20 - Budgies remain popular pets and these card picture them in all their different colours. The numbered backs give further information for instance we learn that the White Blue Budgerigars are the most sensational colour ever bred and where often give as betrothal gifts by princes of the royal house of Japan and when a Mr Illingworth of England supplied two in this rare colour for a record £200 this forced up prices in the UK. These cards were obviously available from bird seed suppliers as the back informs us that once a set had been collected it should be returned to the supplier for a prize. The cards also state that the set would be returned and that is probably why the cards all have one corner officially cut so they could not be used to claim again. Among the birds featured are a Half-Sider Budgerigar which the card explains is a freak of nature and not breeding, Blue Pied Budgies first bred in Belgium, Rainbows which make lovely pets, an Albino which the card says don’t let out of its cage as it soon gets dirty, Light Yellows first bred in 1870 and Light Green Budgies who take their colour from the original wild birds in Australia. These cards are size 68 x 36mm.
