Sweetule Miscellaneous Trade Cards Do You Know 1963 Do You Know 1963 25 - This interesting and colourful set covers the sort of questions that these days we can easily find the answer to online, but in the 1960s, when this was issued, would require a trip to the library such as how a Brazil nut grows, how a grasshopper sings, how a nettle stings, how fast an ostrich can travel or why a billiard cue is bevelled. Comprehensive explanations are given on the card backs. Our favourite has to be ‘Why a horse-shoe is used for luck’ as this has a local connection. Apparently these are considered lucky because legend says that St Dunstan, who was born just down the road, was noted for his skill in shoeing horses and he shoed the devil’s hoof, but this caused the devil so much pain he vowed never to enter a place where a horse-shoe was displayed – so now you know! This set was also produced by B.T. Ltd, Ching & Co., Cromwell Stores, Ovaltine and S. Priory and was also part of a set of 50 produced by Liam Devlin & Sons – see website for availability. This set is size 68 x 36mm.

Sweetule Native North American Indians and Cowboys The Wild West Back in Blue 1960 The Wild West Back in Blue 1960 25 - This excellent colour set pictures the life and difficulties of living in the old American west where the natives were often hostile, the journey long and the risk of cattle stampeding or drowning in swollen rivers was high. We meet characters such as Buffalo Bill, Custer, Geronimo, Wild Bill Hickok, Davy Crockett, Jesse James and Sitting Bull, follow cowboys as they round up and brand cattle or gamble in a saloon, see a gold prospector at work and look at how native tribes lived. The numbered backs contain plenty of interesting facts. Plenty to appeal to any fan of the old west. This set is also issued by Barratt both with heavy serif on its title. Size 65 x 35mm.
