Ching Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Do You Know 1962 Do You Know 1962 25 - This interesting and colourful set covers the sort of questions that these days we can easily find the answer to online, but in the 1960s, when this was issued, would require a trip to the library such as how a Brazil nut grows, how a grasshopper sings, how a nettle stings, how fast an ostrich can travel or why a billiard cue is bevelled. Comprehensive explanations are given on the card backs. Our favourite has to be ‘Why a horse-shoe is used for luck’ as this has a local connection. Apparently these are considered lucky because legend says that St Dunstan, who was born just down the road, was noted for his skill in shoeing horses and he shoed the devil’s hoof, but this caused the devil so much pain he vowed never to enter a place where a horse-shoe was displayed – so now you know! This set was also produced by B.T. Ltd, Cromwell Stores, Ovaltine, S. Prior and Sweetule Products and was also part of a set of 50 produced by Liam Devlin & Sons – see website for availability. This set is size 68 x 36mm.

Among the vessels is a whale factory ship, fire-float, a U.S.A atomic submarine, car ferry, trawler, lifeboat, aircraft carrier, steamboat, weather ship, tug etc. This set was also produced by E.H. Ching Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Jersey Past and Present 3rd Series 1961 Jersey Past and Present 3rd Series 1961 L24 - Issued with Ching & Co cigarettes this 3rd Series, like the 1st and 2nd Series, contains a mixture of reproductions of artwork of the island from around 100 years ago and photos taken in the early 1960s. The pictures are all in colour and places include St. Brelade’s Bay, Corbiere Lighthouse, Portelet Bay, Rozel Harbour, Bouley Bay etc. What is different about this set is that it contains a number of ships which either plied their trade between the island and England or came to grief on the treacherous rocks off the coast. The backs are full of interesting information, for instance we learn that the S.S. Stella sank of Casquets Reef with the loss of 100 lives including stewardess Mary Roberts who gave away her own life-belt in the last minutes or that Janvrin’s Tomb on a small island off of Portelet is named after the captain of a plague ship who died there and as buried there in sight of his home. An album was also issued to accompany this series. This is a lovely pictorial record of a beautiful island with cards size 76 x 64mm.

Ching Motoring Veteran and Vintage Cars 1960 Veteran and Vintage Cars 1960 50 - Holidaymakers in Jersey back in the 1960s would remember coming across the local Best Virginia Cigarettes made on the island by Ching & Co. with which were packed cards, 50 Veteran and Vintage Cars. In 1960 the definition of ‘veteran’ was cars produced before 1916, whilst ‘vintage’ applied to those from 1916 to 1930, and indeed all the subjects fall into those two categories. However, the series falls into two parts, numbers 1 to 25 being logically arranged chronologically from Hammell 1886 through to Pierce-Arrow 1916 – all veterans. But if you expected numbers 26 to 50 to be the follow-on vintage group you would be wrong, because this second part goes back to 1892 before progressing through to 1923, and, in fact only the last three cards are ‘vintage’! The final card is the three-litre Bentley, the prototype of which took to the road in 1919 and went on to gain victories at Le Mans in the 1920s. “This sports car remained in production, with added improvements, as long as the firm of Bentley existed as an independent unit” we are told. We believe this was 1931 when Rolls-Royce took the business over. Lots of fascinating information on these cards, with colourful illustration. Size 68 x 36mm
