Rothmans Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Cinema Stars 1925 Cinema Stars 1925 L25 - The talkies were a turning point in cinema history and many of the ‘silent’ stars failed to make the transition, often because of a heavy foreign accent. This set takes us back to the mid-1920s, the heyday of the silent silver screen, with twenty-five actual photographs each being “one of a fine series now being packed with Rothman’s Pall Mall Virginia Cigarettes”. Among them we find matinee idols Ivor Novello and Ramon Novarro, cowboys Tom Mix and Hoot Gibson, child actor Jackie Coogan and leading actresses such as Norma Shearer, Gloria Swanson and Bebe Daniels, who with her husband Ben Lyon was later to amuse British radio listeners during the war and after with “Life With The Lyons”. Size 80 x 62mm

The dogs are set within appropriate backgrounds and many of the cards contain more than one example of the breed. We love the pictures of the Bulldog guarding his bowl, Otterhounds paddling in the stream, the Labrador Retriever with a duck in its mouth or the Yorkshire Terrier next to his cushion. There is informative text on the reverse full of facts about the breed. A lovely set with cards size 68 x 36mm

Players Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Boy Scout and Girl Guide Patrol Signs and Emblems 1933 (C.C.S. reprint 2001) Boy Scout and Girl Guide Patrol Signs and Emblems 1933 (C.C.S. reprint 2001) 50 - Originally issued in 1933 these reprints from 2001 picture both the patrol sign or emblem and the actual creature or plant on which this is based. The first half of the set are all Boy Scout patrol signs including the Beaver, Curlew and Panther and the text on the back tells us about the creature as well as which badges this patrol should specialize in and their call. For instance members of Fox patrol have a call or bark of “Ha Ha” and should study woodcraft and the habits of wildlife. The remainder of the set are Girl Guide emblems which are all bird or plant related and include Swallow, Robin, Primrose and Poppy. As with the backs of the Boy Scout cards the creature or plant is described on the reverse, but instead of a call the patrol motto such as that for Chaffinch Patrol of “Play the game and play it well” is given. This is an excellent set with cards size 68 x 36mm.
