Pets 1960
Horniman Tea Dogs and Pets Pets 1960 Pets 1960 48 - These interesting cards were originally issued in packets of Horniman’s tea in 1960. The colour pictures by W. Suschitzky start with a few different dog and cat breeds, a rabbit and guinea pig, all perfectly standard, but then the creatures get more unusual and we would argue that many would be unlikely pets for the average household. These include a badger, fox cubs, red squirrel, bush baby, jay, slow worm, dormouse and natterjack toad. Most of these are protected species today and indeed for some their very existence is threatened so we can but hope they are not kept as pets these days. The text on the reverse of the cards was edited by naturalist Maxwell Knight and gives plenty of information on how to keep the pet safe and well including what to feed them and how they should be housed. The backs also tell us that an album to hold these cards could be obtained from grocers or direct from the company for 6d. With excellent pictures and informative text this is a well-rounded set and a must for anyone interested in wildlife. Cards size 68 x 38mm.
