Ardath Set of EL25 Film, Stage & Radio Stars 1935

As a follow-up to the revelations about the origin of the name ‘Ardath’ and that firm’s ‘State Express’ brand (see September’s Card.Collectors News Magazine)  have chosen the extra-large size series of 25 Film, Stage & Radio Stars as our Set of the Month for November. Such big cards (95 x 68mm) required large packets and this indeed was the case because they were “issued in 25s and larger packings” we are told on the backs. The head and shoulders sepia photo-portraits feature many of the most popular figures of the entertainment world in the mid-1930s including great Hollywood icons such as Garbo, Dietrich, Clarke Gable, Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers, interspersed with British radio favourites like Henry Hall, Elsie and Doris Waters (Gert and Daisy), Stanley Holloway, Gracie Fields and Noel Coward. The issue date, 1935, is confirmed by reference to Leslie Howard’s card which says “aged 42 this tall Adonis is a strong swimmer, keen cricketer and polo player”. Leslie’s life was cut short in a wartime air crash.
