British American Tobacco Set of 48 Transport Then and Now 1940
Coinciding with an article about the British American Tobacco Co. in the May edition of Card Collectors News, we have chosen as our Set of the Month for May B.A.T. 48 Transport Then & Now. The provenance of this series was debated in Card Collectors News of November 1943 and February 1944, which makes interesting reading, and the catalogued date of issue (1940, with preparation in 1939) seems about right in view of the land speed record date 16th September 1938 quoted on no. 18 and the fact that no. 2 says the liner Queen Mary will "shortly be joined" on the Atlantic run by her sister ship the Queen Elizabeth (in fact the Elizabeth had to make a secret maiden voyage to New York in March 1940 to become a troop transport and her commercial sailing debut was not until October 1946). The series comprises 24 pairs of cards, each showing a mode of transport as at the present and in the past and a great diversity is covered from dog-sled to dustcart as well as the more conventional subjects in our picture. However, "Transport" is stretching it as the description for nos. 44 (postman) and 43 (runner of Alfred The Great) who use only their own legs in the course of their duties! A great opportunity to acquire an excellent set in mint condition at a terrific discount.
B.A.T. 48 Transport Then and Now (1940) in Mint Condition is catalogued at £25.00
