International Tobacco Co. (Overseas) Set of 100 Gentlemen! The King (back in black)1937

Our choice for March is a series issued 75 years ago during coronation year, 1937, but obviously prepared in 1935 because “The King” in Gentlemen! The King is George V not his successor, and, as stated on the card backs, is “a pictorial biography of H.M. George V” following his Silver Jubilee, so it’s an appropriate set to offer in 2012 as his granddaughter Elizabeth celebrates her Diamond Jubilee. It is unusual in being of two different sizes, sixty standard and forty large, it is on art paper instead of cardboard so that it could be inserted into a book which the manufacturers were offering at the time and it was an export issue not available in Great Britain (the firm having been taken over by A & M Wix in 1934, as mentioned by Peter Minns in his article in the March copy of Card Collectors News magazine). The colour pictures take us from the King’s early childhood in 1866 and no. 89 is his second son, the Duke of York, prophetically described as “the father of the young lady who may one day sit upon the throne of England.” Indeed she does!

This set of International Tob. Co. (overseas) 100 Gentlemen! The King (1937) back in black in very good condition is catalogued at £20.00.
