C.W.S. Set of 24 African Types 1936

Our set is an unusual series produced by the Co-operative Wholesale Society’s tobacco branch in 1936 – unusual both for the subject matter and the presentation. Titled African Types, the 24 colour pictures illustrate native people from various parts of the dark continent from Soudan in north to the Cape in the south, in traditional dress and engaged in everyday activities – carrying water, cooking, harvesting, weaving, etc. – with tribes such as the Zulu and Masai, although many are referred to simply as “Kaffir” being then the general term for South African natives, but nowadays a word with derogatory or racist undertones. The backs bear a basic description, an advert fo Raydex Tobacco, and a zebra.
