Got the post-Christmas blues? Need cheering up during January's dark and dreary days? Then our Set of the Month is just what the doctor ordered a large does of cheerful floral beauties to be taken three times a day, Gallaher's 48 Garden Flowers. Snowdrops (no. 27) should be making an appearance any time now, and 'look delightful mixed with crocuses' (no. 46) we are told, whilst hereabouts in Somerset Daffodils (no. 39) and Narcissus (no. 1) are just beginning to push above the soil as harbingers of the spring to come. Most of the subjects in this series are instantly recognisable even to those of us who are not regular viewers of "Gardener's World", but some are less familiar Lychris, Layia and Hemerocallis being cases in point see them for yourself on 43,31 and 18 respectively. A surprising inclusion is Apple Blossom (no. 5) which I'm sure most of us wouldn't count as a 'garden' flower. Perhaps Mr. Clarke whose "Bloomin' Great" article is in January's Card Collectors News Magazine, can offer an expert opinion, but when all's said and done it doesn't really matter because they're lovely to look at and the backs tell you how to grow them successfully and at a cost less than a small bouquet at the florists.
