Gallaher Set of 48 Portraits of Famous Stars 1935
Fred Astaire, Katharine Hepburn, Douglas Fairbanks, Marlene Dietrich and Gertrude Lawrence ? famous stars indeed whose names are as familiar today as they were in 1935 when Gallahers pictured them in their series of 48 Portraits of Famous Stars. The cinema in the mid-1930s was at the peak of its popularity, with U.K. admissions exceeding fifty million a week. And one of the biggest box office successes was the film version of John Buchan?s ?The Thirty-Nine Steps?. The two stars, Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll, both feature in this card series, reviving memories of their gripping adventure as fugitives, a classic portrayal that has never been equalled in the several remakes. Not all the ?stars? in the set are instantly recognisable, and we must admit that we?ve never heard of Lorna Storm, Tomari Desni or Grete Natzler. Excellent colour portraits are backed by informative texts.
The set of 48 cards of Portraits of Famous Stars 1935 is catalogued at £50.00
