Rothman Set of 24 Prominent Screen Favourites 1934

Interesting not only for the fact that this was an export only issue by Rothmans of Pall Mall in the autumn of 1934, at a time when the firm did not pack cards with cigarettes sold in the UK, but it was also issued (three years later) by Louis Gerard under the title ‘Screen Favourites’ Our set of the month is the Rothman’s issue. Although there are twenty-four cards in the set, there are only eighteen different actresses – Betty Stockfeld appears twice, Anne Grey three times and Dorothy Bartlam is on now fewer than four cards! What they were thinking of when they compiled this series we will never know, but there was certainly no shortage of film stars and starlets who could have been selected. Anyway, the varnished pictures were ‘reproduced from actual photographs’ we are told on the card backs, and the glamorous poses are quite racy for the period. Also, whilst some would have been pleased to see themselves referred to as “A British Int. Picture Star”, others could well have been miffed at being called “A British Int. Picture Player”.
