Players Set of L24 The Golden Age of Steam 1976

In the April issue of Card Collectors News magazine we saw part of one of a feature celebrating the 150th anniversary of the London Underground. The illustrations included a Metropolitan Railway steam locomotive dating from 1866. This was one of the 24 The Golden Age of Steam cards issued with Player’s Doncella Cigars in 1976, chosen as our Set of the Month for May. The series includes many of the most famous names in British railway history such as “City Truro” (100mph in 1904), “King George V” (in 1927 Britain’s most powerful loco, shipped to America for railway centenary celebrations), “Flying Scotsman” (the best known of all Gresley Pacifics), “Sir Nigel Gresley” (one of the 35 high-speed A4 streamlined Pacifics of which “Mallard” attained the world record steam speed of 126mph in 1938), and “Evening Star” (in 1960 the last steam locomotive built by British Rail at Swindon). The descriptive backs are highly informative. This is a true classic, impeccably produced, a ‘must’ for anyone with even a passing interest in railways and amazing value.
