The sporting elite in this set includes Alfred Padgham, the 1936 British Open Golf Champion (one of 8 golfers), World No. 1 and 1934 Wimbledon Champion Fred Perry among twelve tennis players which also include Helen Wills-Moody, but thirty of the fifty cards are cricketers – and what a line-up! Harold ‘Bodyline’ Larwood whose bowling infuriated the Aussies, Frank Woolley the world’s greatest left-handed batsman, Gloucester’s Wally Hammond ‘one of the greatest all-rounders in the world’, Patsy Hendren who beat W.G. Grace’s record of 126 centuries, Hedley Verity who captured fifteen Australian wickets in a Test Match at Lords, and veteran Jack Hobbs having completed thirty year’s service with Surrey and is credited with scoring 199 centuries, a record which still stands today, who had just retired from first-class cricket at the age of 52. Brilliant stuff!
This set of 50 Cricket, Tennis and Golf Celebrities issued by Ardath in 1935 in finest collectible condition is catalogued at £70.00.
