Carreras 1926 series of Famous Escapes, the large size printing, is our November ‘Set of The Month’. Of the incidents graphically depicted on these cards no fewer than three are devoted to the daring escapes of the resourceful thief Jack Sheppard from Newgate Prison. Among other celebrated ‘disappearing acts’ are those of Bonny Prince Charlie after Culloden, Mary Queen of Scots from Loch Leven Castle, King Charles after the Battle of Worcester, a mass breakout by 28 prisoners who tunnelled their way our of a Paris prison, William Tell, Napoleon III and Lady Arabella Stuart, wife of William Seymour, who escaped from house-arrest after being detained owing to a possible claim to the throne of England. Probably the most famous of all is Winston Churchill gaining his freedom from a Boer prison by scaling the wall and hitching a ride beneath sacks of wool on a goods train. (Note the nature of the glaze-coating on these cards means that they are slightly concave).
