| R & J Hill were one of the oldest
tobacco firms in the world, having been started by the brothers Hill
in 1775 and they will certainly be familiar to card collectors because
their issues occupy five pages in the Cigarette Card Catalogue. What
became of the company we don’t know, because the last reference we
have come across is that in 1956 when they were part of
Sinclair/Murray, so their demise is a bit of a puzzle. And that brings
us to our set of the month, Hill’s 50 Puzzle Series, issued in 1937.
The title itself is a puzzle, because they subjects are nearly all
magical tricks rather than puzzles and indeed when a second printing
came out in 1938 it was re-titled “Magical Puzzles”. The pictures
illustrate the magician’s stock in trade using string, coins, cards,
matches, glasses, handkerchiefs etc., as props with a detailed
explanation on the card backs so that, with a little practice and some
sleight of hand, you too can amaze your friends!
The Set of 50 R & J Hill’s Puzzle Series 1937 in Very Good condition
is catalogued at £60.00.
