| MARCH 2006 SET OF THE MONTH |
| Carreras 27 Views of London 1929 |
| Our set of the month includes a
wonderful photograph of Ludgate Hill with St Pauls in the background,
a Southern Railway tank engine steaming across the bridge beneath
which can be seen several crowded open-topped buses. The picture is so
stunningly clear that, using a magnifier, your can see the route
numbers on the buses and even read the advertisements on buildings.
Issued by Carreras in 1929, this is one of twenty-seven Views of
London. Pretty well every major landmark is included, from Marble Arch
in the west to Tower Bridge in the east, so you can organise your own
tour of the capital. But what is particularly fascinating is the
amount of detail revealed in the street scenes – a horse-drawn cab
below Big Ben, a delivery boy cycling past the Horse Guards, the motor
cars and most of all, the throng of people going about their business
more than three-quarters of a century ago. Magic. The set of 27 Carreras Views of London 1929 in finest collectable condition is catalogued at £11.00 |
