This month is devoted to mans
great companion, the dog, in a series of twenty-five paintings by the
distinguished artist, Arthur Wardle. Already a favourite with collectors for
his portrayal of dogs in three other John Player series pre-war, Wardle was
commissioned to produce this new set known as Dogs Pairs and
Groups which are thought to have been printed in the early 1950s, but
which for one reason or another were never actually issued with cigarettes.
Concentrating on hounds, spaniels and terriers, plus a few other breeds such as
the Saluki, Borzois and Setter, each picture shows either two or three examples
of the pedigree in a way which demonstrates the artists love of his
subject, bringing out the character of each individual animal. The backs are
highly informative about the origin of the breeds, their uses, famous owners,
etc., and reveal some interesting facts for instance did you know that
Jack Russell Terriers were named after the Rev. Jack Russell.
