Phillips This Mechanized Age First Series. These cards were issued in
1936 and proved to be enormously popular. It is easy to understand why
the series was so successful. The colour pictures feature the latest
advances in transport, manufacturing, engineering, mining,
communications, health, armaments and agriculture, whilst the card
backs make enthralling reading. Without going into too much detail
some of the diverse subjects covered are the Mersey Tunnel, cigarette
manufacture, the White City Totalisator, Battersea Power Station, the
escalator at Holborn underground, the Queen Mary, Blue Bird, a
combined harvester, the latest London bus, ice cream packaging, dental
x-rays, a newspaper press, an amphibious tank for the Army, the Silver
Jubilee express and a broadcasting studio. |
