NOVEMBER 2003 SET OF THE MONTH
Players Set of 50 Modern Naval Craft 1939
When Player’s series of 50 Modern Naval Craft was issued at the beginning of 1939, World War II was just a few months away, and many of the vessels would soon be in action. In December, HMS “Exeter” (card no. 6) was one of the ships involved in the Battle of the River Plate against the German battleship “Admiral Graf Spee2 (no. 24). In May, 1940, HMS “Warspite” (no. 2) created havoc at Narvik inflicting great damage on German defences. A year later, the battle cruiser HMS “Hood” (no. 4) was sunk by the “Bismarck”. Only three of the crew of 1400 survived. Three days later, the “Bismarck” got her comeuppance when Swordfish torpedo bombers from HMS “Ark Royal” (no. 16) damaged her rudder enabling the pursuing British force to finish her off. The Ark met her demise in November 1941, torpedoed off Gibraltar by a U-boat (no.27), followed by more bad news in December when the latest battleship HMS “Prince of Wales” and the older battle cruiser HMS “Repulse” (no. 5) were sunk by Japanese aircraft off Malaya.
Among others in the British section of this set is an M.T.B, one of the small, fast, 40-knot plus vessels, which proved so versatile and effective through the war.
The world’s then biggest navies – the American, Japanese, French, Italian and German are all represented in this set. In fact this set was found in a German U-Boat used for recognition.
