As befits a Glasgow-based company
Stephen Mitchell & Son produced several series of cards on a
Scottish theme including our set of the month, Clan Tartans 2nd Series,
dating from 1927. As you will discover when you buy these cards, they
have been given a linen finish to appear and feel like fabric. The wide
variety of tartans illustrated in colour each surrounds a portrait of a
prominent member from the clan's history, all described on the card
backs. So, as you would expect, the Bruce clan is represented by King
Robert the Bruce and the MacDonald's by Flora MacDonald, but the others
might not be quite so well known outside Scotland. For Douglas, we have
James Douglas, Regent of Scotland, beheaded in 1581; for Fletcher there
is Andrew Fletcher, Scottish patriot charged with treason in 1688;
Hamilton is represented by the Duke of Hamilton who led a Scottish army
into England in 1648 and was executed the following year, whilst for
Lennox we see the Duke of Albany who married Queen Mary in 1565, was
proclaimed King of Scotland and was murdered two years later, and
William Wallace "the Hero of Scotland" for defeating the
English, was captured and executed in 1305. Perhaps the red in so many
of the tartans symbolises the clan's bloody history.
