May is traditionally a treat for
lovers of sport and this month we will be enjoying the F.A. Cup Final, the
Division Football League Play-Off Finals, the U.E.F.A. Cup Final, the Champions
League Final, the Rugby Union Cup Final, the First Test Match at Lords and the
opening ceremony of the World Cup Finals in Japan and Korea. No doubt similar
activity took place in 1936 when Gallahers issued with their "De-Luxe"
cigarettes a series of 48 Sporting Personalities which is now our 'set of the
month'. Many of the names will still be remembered today, such was their
brilliance - Alex James, Dixie Dean, Clifford Bastin, Len Harvey, Kid Berg,
Gordon Richards, Steve Donoghue, Frank Woolley, Jack Hobbs and Patsy Hendren -
just a few of the stars in this sporting hall of fame. Other colourful
characters include Bertram Mills of circus fame (he put up £10,000 for
the capture of the Loch Ness Monster), the Aga Khan, Malcolm Campbell, Lord
Lonsdale and Lord Clydesdale ( the first person to fly over Mount Everest). Oh,
and Ted Phelps, winner of Doggett's Coat and Badge. Pictured in excellent
