June 5th is Derby Day this year, and
our choice of set this month will remind us of the exciting and colourful
events to be enjoyed on this great sporting occasion. Gallaher's 48 Racing
Scenes, issued in June 1938, presents us with pictures which begin with the
unloading of horses at Epsom Station before taking us to the paddock, then
Tattenham Corner, and finally the Aga Khan leading in Mahmoud in 1936 - his
third Derby winner. Derby Day is as much about the people as it is the horses,
and on these cards we meet some of the characters - tipster Prince Monolulu,
the gypsies on the heath and the Pearly King and Queen, as well as Lord Derby
and champion jockeys Gordon Richards and Freddie Fox. Elsewhere in the set are
other highlights of the racing calendar - the Grand National, Goodwood, and
Royal Ascot. The colour pictures have first-class texts on the backs. You can
almost smell the horses! This
set of Gallaher 48 Racing Scenes 1938 in Very Good Condition is catalogued at
£30.00 |
