JULY 2002 SET OF THE MONTH
R Lloyd Set of 25 Tricks & Puzzles 1935
Astound your family and friends with tricks and puzzles from this collection. Have you ever wanted to know how to write a simple addition totalling 1240 and then get rid of one of the amounts and still add up to 1240 or move a ball inside a jar without touching the sides – find out how in this interesting set. As you can see from our illustration the cards are clearly published in black and white, with the trick or puzzle on one side including a text and illustration for each card and then on the back is the solution. Most of the cards show easy tricks or puzzles, which don’t require expensive props or special talent. Card 18 for instance uses a matchbox and 3 matches for an impressive, but very simple puzzle. Card No.13 tells you to draw a diagram of 16 squares with a point in the centre of each – the trick is to join the 16 points by making 6 straight lines without lifting the pen from the paper – this sounds impossible, but it’s easy when you see how! Richard Lloyd & Sons of London which were founded in 1875 and later became a branch of Cope Brothers, were one of the smaller issuers of cigarette cards issuing 4 sets before the First World War and a further 10 sets in the 1920s and 30s, this set being one of their later issues. This is an interesting set, which is offered in finest collectible condition at £25.00.
