Our set of the month for April was
issued by Carreras cigarettes back in 1938. It is their second series of
54 Film Stars and features exclusively female subjects in black and
white photographic poses which are quite racy for the period. Included
are well-established stars such as Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Joan
Blondell, Carole Lombard, Maureen O'Sullivan, Anna Neagle and Florence
Desmond (who had described her own series of film stars for Carreras two
years earlier). But there is also a bevy of new glamorous stars who
were to become wartime pin-ups boosting forces' morale - Olivia De
Havilland, Deanna Durbin, Betty Grable and Dorothy Lamour. The film
studios are named on the backs, together with an advert for a slip-in
album "obtainable from all tobacconists, price one penny".
Those were the days!
