It was Ogdens last card
series, and thats official. Accompanying a review in the January 1940
issue of Card Collectors News was a statement by Ogdens saying The
issue of cigarette cards has already been discontinued but we cannot give you
any indication as to what will happen in the future. As our reviewer
pointed out, the news was depressing, but the set concerned, Sea Adventure,
certainly was not, the full colour pictures illustrating epic voyagers, sea
battles and adventures of one kind or another, described in detail on the
highly informative backs. We see Columbus landing in America, but also Eric the
Red who probably beat Columbus to it by 500 years. We encounter pirates,
buccaneers, press-gangs, slaves, sea-serpents, sharks and whales. We experience
mutinies, ship-wrecks, acts of individual heroism and mysterious happenings, as
well as joining great voyages of exploration with the likes of Anson, Slocum,
Cook and Shackleton. We meet Robinson Crusoe, the Hermit of Cocos Islands,
Nelson and the Bounty Mutineers. And we learn the story of legendary ships such
as the Mary Celeste and the Great Western. Hows
that for variety! Hail, Sea Adventure, farewell, Ogdens said
our reviewer finishing with the words We are going to miss you, but hope
the parting will only be brief. We are still missing you, Ogdens,
but collectors can enjoy your classic last set.
