| Another beautiful issue in colour up
to or above even the standard of its predecessors. It's predecessors were the
first two series and now we have Hill's Views of Interest Third Series issued
in 1939. To describe the subjects as being "exclusively holiday resorts" is
stretching it a bit. Bournemouth, Ilfracombe, Felixstowe, Llandudno, Newquay
and Torquay, fair enough, but what about Broadway (Worcs.), Ely, Glasgow (three
views including the Municipal Buildings), Millers Dale, Goring and
Killiecrankie (a narrow pass in Perthshire)? Resorts in the accepted sense or
not, they are all interesting places to visit and I was pleased to find four
views of Edinburgh from where my wife and I have just returned after a short
holiday using Virgin trains. And thereby stands another link with this card
series because nearly all the photographs were supplied by railway companies -
Southern, G.W.R., L.M.S. and L.N.E.R., as credited on the card backs. The
informative texts include this extract from the Weston-Super-Mare card "The
district is rich in treasures and relics of bygone days, Glastonbury, Dunster,
Wells and Sedgemoor are all in the near vicinity". They could also have
mentioned Somerton, equally accessible and now famous for its "relics of bygone
days" - cigarette and trade cards. |
