It was issued 67 years ago, but
many of the men and women in our set of the month for January 2002 are
still legends today - Don Bradman, Bunny Austin, Fred Perry, Malcolm
Campbell, Joe Davis, Len Harvey, Helen Jacobs, Gordon Richards, Henry
Cotton, Alex James - a veritable Who's Who of top sports personalities
from the 1930s. Summing up briefly and to the point our reviewer in the
May 1935 edition of Card Collectors News, C.L. Poter said "Ardath
Sports Champions A Series of 50 small cards. Every branch of sport is
covered and the reproduction is up to the usual excellent Ardath
standard. All the issues made by this firm since coupons ceased have
enjoyed great popularity and this will be no exception." The colour
head and shoulders portraits are backed by texts telling us about their
remarkable achievements. Also on the backs is the information that the
cards were issued with State Express 333 luxury cigarettes 10 for 6d. By
coincidence, I learn that B.A.T. are to re-launch the State Express
brand 555 in the UK during the coming year, but not alas with any cards.
