The choice for this month is a set
issued exactly sixty-five years ago, in December 1936, packed in 10s
and 20s of Ardath Cork Tipped and State Express 333s. The 25
Proverbs will be familiar to everyone - A Fool and his money.., A Stitch
in time.., Birds of a feather
, Its an ill wind
, and so
on, but these are not dry old sayings - they are brought to life in
humorous modern contexts by superb colour illustrations. What a pity the
artists name isnt acknowledged. The drawings are very
clever, and the series is interesting and amusing wrote our new
issues editor C.L.Porter at the time. True enough, but these cards
deserve more praise than that. When youve finished enjoying the
pictures, read the backs. They delve into the proverbs origins and
then carry us forward to the twentieth century. Highly recommended, and
offered in finest collectable condition.
