Rockwell Trade Card sets Under £5 Airship The Story of the R101 2003 Airship The Story of the R101 2003 10 - This series of stunning photographs illustrates the tragic demise of Britain’s great pioneering airship the R101. Heralded as the dawn of a new era of air travel, the R101 was the largest flying machine ever. Built at the government airship works at Cardington, Bedfordshire, she made her debut on 12th October, 1929, but major design problems became apparent in test flights, and doubts remained after large scale alterations. Grossly over-loaded and in gale-force winds the R101 began its maiden flight to India on 4th October, 1930, crashing and exploding in Northern France seven hours after take-off. Half a million people lined the streets of London for the funeral. The text backs tell the full story. size 68 X 36mm
