Alas the years have taken their toll and many of the stars, including Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, John Laurie, Arnold Ridley and Jimmy Beck, are no longer with us, but the excellent and very comprehensive text backs reveal each of their life stories right through to the present in the case of Ian Lavender (Private Pike) appearing in Sister Act the Musical in the West End. Numerous sexy siren roles followed before she demonstrated her true acting talent in “Yield to the Night”, continuing with film and TV roles until her death aged 53 in 1984. Abbott and Costello 2010 10 - The “Bowery Boys” Bud Abbott and Lou Costello developed into a great comedy team moving from burlesque into radio then film with a long-term contract with Universal to become amongst the most popular and highly paid entertainment of World War II. More films and a weekly TV series followed, but the partnership split up in 1957. Long after their deaths they received Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of their comedic careers. Arthur Askey - Comedy Heroes 2012 10 - “Big-hearted” Arthur Askey, the diminutive (5’2”) Liverpudlian star of radio, TV and film, achieved early success in “Band Waggon” which began on the BBC in 1938 and continued through the war when he also featured in several comedy films, before moving on to the small screen in the 1950s with “Before Your Very Eyes” as well as recording memorable ditties such as “The Bee Song” and appearances as a pantomime dame in a career which lasted almost until his death in 1982. His life story features on the back of these cards picturing Arthur in this prime. Size 68 x 36mm.
