Tribute Collectables Film & Stage Stars 1920 –1940 Abbott and Costello 2010 Abbott and Costello 2010 10 - The “Bowery Boys” Bud Abbott and Lou Costello developed into a great comedy team moving from burlesque into radio then film with a long-term contract with Universal to become amongst the most popular and highly paid entertainment of World War II. More films and a weekly TV series followed, but the partnership split up in 1957. Long after their deaths they received Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of their comedic careers. Here, we learn John Wayne acquired the nickname ”Duke” when as a child he was inseparable from the family’s huge Airedale “Little Duke”. After a summer job in a studio prop room he began getting small parts in low-budget Westerns, but his career really took off when he featured in John Ford’s “Stagecoach” in 1939. One starring role followed another through the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s, culminating with a Best Actor Oscar for “True Grit”. The black and white photos on these cards show him in a variety of familiar roles. Size 68 x 36mm.

Spooktastic Cards Film & Stage Stars 1920 –1940 Karloff (Boris Karloff Tribute To The Horror Legend) 2010 Karloff (Boris Karloff Tribute To The Horror Legend) 2010 10 - Peckham-born William Pratt adopted the name Boris Karloff after emigrating to Canada and making his way to the USA where he obtained parts in silent films before shooting to stardom as the monster in Frankenstein (1931), a role turned down by Bela Lugosi, as we discover on the early cards in this series of blue and white photos illustrating the actor’s menacing looks which served him well in a succession of horror movies, revisiting the Frankenstein story several times, as a mad scientist, body snatcher, etc., as well as stage and TV work, a career recognised with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the 1960s she concentrated on stage and TV appearances including 'The Judy Garland Show' in which her daughters from her first marriage, Lorna and Liza Minnelli, regularly appeared. The dancer, who made his stage debut at the age of six with his sister Adele, became the biggest musical film star of the 1930s head-lining a string of box office hits with his dancing partner Ginger Rogers, beginning with 'Flying Down to Rio' and on to 'Top Hat', 'Follow The Fleet' and more, whilst in 1948 Fred teamed up with Judy Garland for 'Easter Parade' and in 1953 with Cyd Charisse for 'The Band Wagon' and 'Silk Stockings'. The backs tell the remarkable story of the Lancastrian who rose to fame as a banjo/ukelele playing comedian, star of stage, radio, cinema and television, who brought joy to audiences over a period of almost four decades, including a stint with ENSA entertaining front-line troops at Monty's request in World War II. Numerous hit recordings and popular films made him the highest-earning British artiste, but his life was cut short by a fatal heart attack at the age of 56. Tribute Collectables Film & Stage Stars 1920 –1940 Josephine Baker (Dancer & Actress) 2010 Josephine Baker (Dancer & Actress) 2010 10 - Throughout her flamboyant life, Josephine Baker, was as much known for her celebrity status as for the dancing talent that first made her famous. Heading to Paris from America in 1925 at the age of 19, she became a sensation in ‘La Revue Negre’, then star of the Folies Bergere. Having taken French citizenship, she became a wartime Resistance courier and spy, for which she was awarded the Croix de Guerre. In the 1950s she returned to the States and took up the civil rights cause, but the later years were back in France and she became the first American woman to receive a state funeral in that country. Sporting Profiles Film & Stage Stars 1920 –1940 Movie Idols The Marx Brothers 2006 Movie Idols The Marx Brothers 2006 L12 - One of the all-time great comedy partnerships was forged by the Marx brothers Chico (real name Leonard), Harpo (Adolph), Groucho (Julius) and Zeppo (Zeppo!) Their first film as a team was in 1925, but this latest card series of Movie Idols begins in 1929 with “The Cocoanuts” and treats us to “Animal Crackers”, “Monkey Business”, “Horse Feathers”, “Duck Soup”, “A Night at the Opera”, “A Day at the Races” and so on through to “The Big Store” (1941), their last team-effort, plus two further films minus Zeppo, all recalled on the original film posters. Sporting Profiles Film & Stage Stars 1920 –1940 Movie Idols John Wayne Series 3 (War Films) 2010 Movie Idols John Wayne Series 3 (War Films) 2010 L15 - So prolific was the ‘Duke’, aka John Wayne the original tough guy, that Sporting Profiles have had no problem in putting together another fifteen posters featuring his starring roles in films. This selection starts with “The Sea Spoilers” (1936) and “Seven Sinners” (1940) followed by five great action movies set in World War II, the most famous of which is probably “Sands of Iwo Jima” with Wayne as the gritty Sergeant Stryker. The twelfth card has him in the all-star cast of the 1962 blockbuster “The Longest Day” and the final appearance “The Green Berets” (1968). The main actors in each film are listed on the backs.
