Old Ships 3rd Series 1936
Issuer: Dominion Tobacco Condition: Very Good to Excellent * These are original and NOT reprints Description: The Dominion Tobacco Company (1929) Ltd issued just four series of cards, all of which were of old ships. This is the third of these, dating from 1936, and it illustrates vessels from Roman times through to the 20th century with some impressively detailed artwork reproduced in a rather drab green colour. The backs are a rich source of maritime history – for example the text relating to Sir Francis Drake’s flagship “Golden Hind” not only gives commonly-known information about his famous voyage, Queen Elizabeth and all that. It also points out that the ship started out as the “Pelican” but Drake changed its name and that after Drake received his knighthood attempts were made to preserve such a famous ship, a trench being dug into the river bank at Deptford into which she was hauled, but she fell to pieces some forty years later. The final three cards picture twentieth century liners “Doric”, “Olympic” and Blue Riband holder “Mauretania”. Coincidentally, all three had been scrapped in 1935. Size 68 x 36mm Number of cards in set: 25
Price for complete set: Only £25.00
