He won an Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in 'The African Queen', but will probably be even better remembered for his gritty, gravely-voiced roles in a range of gangster movies and thrillers. Volume 1 now covers his earlier appearances started with ‘Haunted Gold’ in 1932 and culminating in the 1939 film ‘Stagecoach’ which was a huge critical success and brought superstar status for Marian Morrison (John’s real name).
