This months set is British
American Tobacco Companys series of 48 cards titled Transport Then
and Now. A thoroughly good series of colour pictures backed by excellent
texts. Alternate cards deal with a mode of transport as it was at the date the
series was prepared around 1940 compared with an equivilant from the past.
Sometimes the time lapse is small, as with King George V1s Royal Car
(present) and Edward V11s (past), but with others the gap is much greater
as for the postman of the present versus a runner from the time of Alfred the
Great. Sixty years on, we are now in a position to view the present
cards as being past so Eurostar could be a match for the
cross-channel train ferry. I doubt, however, whether it would be wise to show
one of the present day Virgin West Coast trains against the magnificent
Coronation Scot which covered the 400 miles from London to Glasgow at an
average of over a mile per minute. |
