"Wonderful Century" is a
term which aptly describes many advances during the past one hundred
years. It is also the title of an intriguing series of fifty cigarette
cards issued by the Stephen Mitchell company in 1937. Their "Wonderful
Century" takes a phase of life as carried out in that year, and
compares it with a similar activity in 1837. The result is very
effective indeed, using two contrasting images on each card to
demonstrate the immense changes that took place during that period in
such diverse fields as aeroplanes, coal-mining, food-preserving,
broadcasting, fire-fighting, fashion, architecture and steel-making,
as well as those shown in the illustration below, and the texts on the
card backs are extremely illuminating. This is history as it happened,
awe-inspiring, entertaining and enthralling. It's heart-breaking that
no present-day issuer has come up with a 1901 to 2000 equivalent to
show us how incredibly things have altered even in the past sixty-odd
years since Mitchell's set first saw the light of day. |
