Cather who on separate occasions ventured into ‘No Man’s Land’ under intense fire to rescue the wounded and were killed, Pte. J Hutchinson who not only shot to enemy soldiers, but covered the rest of his regiment whilst the wounded were removed safely, Pte. Albert Hill who attacked the enemy capturing two prisoners, Pte. M. O’Mera who carried ammunition and bombs through heavily shelled trenches and Pte. W.F. Gallaher Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Signed Portraits of Famous Stars 1935 reprint 1997 Signed Portraits of Famous Stars 1935 reprint 1997 48 - Fred Astaire, Katharine Hepburn, Douglas Fairbanks, Marlene Dietrich and Gertrude Lawrence, famous stars indeed whose names are as familiar today as they were in 1935 when Gallahers pictured them in their series of 48 Portraits of Famous Stars. The cinema in the mid-1930s was at the peak of its popularity, with U.K. admissions exceeding fifty million a week. And one of the biggest box office successes was the film version of John Buchan's "The Thirty-Nine Steps" The two stars, Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll, both feature in this card series, reviving memories of their gripping adventure as fugitives, a classic portrayal that has never been equalled in the several remakes. Not all the stars in the set are instantly recognisable to-day such as Tomari Desni or Grete Natzler. Excellent colour portraits are backed by informative texts. Size 63 x 37mm

Gallaher Flowers and the Garden Garden Flowers 1938 Garden Flowers 1938 48 - Most of the subjects in this series are instantly recognisable even to those of us who are not regular viewers of “Gardener’s World”, but some are less familiar – Lychris, Layia and Hemerocallis being cases in point – see them for yourself on 43,31 and 18 respectively. A surprising inclusion is Apple Blossom (no. 5) which I’m sure most of us wouldn’t count as a ‘garden’ flower, but when all’s said and done it doesn’t really matter because they’re lovely to look at and the backs tell you how to grow them successfully . Gallaher Miscellaneous Cigarette Cards Aesops Fables inscribed A Series of 50 (1931) Aesops Fables inscribed A Series of 50 (1931) 25 - Although there are only twenty-five cards, the set is captioned on the backs "Series of 50". We don't know the explanation, but the fact remains this is a remarkably good set with superb illustrations with the fable related on the back, followed by the moral ? such as 'A friend in need is a friend indeed', 'Don't count your chickens before they are hatched', 'One's meat is another's poison', Necessity is the mother of invention', 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder', and so on. The following are particularly apt for the politics of the recent past ? 'In good times remember that bad times may come', 'Changes are not always for the best' and 'The greedy often overreach themselves'. We will leave you to draw your own conclusions as to whom those morals apply! Amazingly, Aesop's fables date back to the 6th century BC, but their morals are timeless. Size 67 x 36mm

Gallaher Dogs and Pets Dogs 1st Series 1936 Dogs 1st Series 1936 48 - From a cute litter of tiny Staffordshire Bull pups to the considerable bulk of a Bull Mastiff, the pictures capture perfectly the individual character of each animal, whilst the backs describe their origin and what makes each breed one of “man’s best friends”. Some interesting facts emerge – the Samoyde “provides the Eskimo with flesh for food and fur for clothing”; the Bulldog, Britain’s national breed, gets its name from its use in bull-baiting; the Clumber Spaniel, favourite breed of George V, is named after Clumber, Nottingham, where it was bred by the Duke of Newcastle; and the Boston Terrier is America’s national breed. Queen Victoria kept Borzois and the Russian Royal Family used them for hunting wolves. Size 63 x 37mm

Gallaher Film & Stage Stars Pre-1940 Shots from Famous Films 1935 Shots from Famous Films 1935 48 - The 48 cards contain delightful colour pictures taken from films of the period showing two of the stars. Amongst the featured films are “Tarzan and his Mate” an action adventure with Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O’Sullivan, “Cleopatra” featuring Claudette Colbert and Henry Wilcoxon, musical comedy “We’re Not Dressing” with Bing Crosby and Carole Lombard, “Flying Down to Rio” with Ginger Rogers and Paul Roulien, which we are told employed over 2,000 extras, Queen Christina starring Greta Garbo, “Manhattan Melodrama” featuring Myrna Loy and Clark Gable and “Nell Gwyn” with Anna Neagle and noted stage actor Sir Cedric Hardwicke. Some of the films such as “A Cup of Kindness” and “The Barratts of Wimpole Street” appear on more than one card, but with different pictures and actors. Were Gallaher showing a personal preference or perhaps there were more than two stars! There are interesting facts related on the backs including the studio behind the production, the original author and a summary of the film story. Size 63 x 37mm
