Full details are
in the auction catalogue but here are some of the highlights
|
| Rare
Early-Period Series |
| Some of the early Wills'
series caught my eye; in particular the Vanity Fair
set at lot 361 (£200) featuring caricatures of prominent
personalities at the turn of the 20th century. From around
the same period are the Kings & Queens at lot 291
(£275) issued while Victoria was still on the throne, and
at lot 108 are five cards from the exceptionally rare Maori
Series of 1900 (lot 108, £400). A fine set which doesn't
come up often is Singleton & Cole's Kings &
Queens (lot 22, £400) issued at the beginning of Edward
VII's reign in 1902. Moving on to the World War I period, we
have Morris's silk Regimental Colours (lot 300, £85),
Gallaher's The Allies Flags (362, £90) and Mitchell's Army
Ribbons & Buttons (363, £90), but for me the star lot
is Player's Life on Board A Man Of War in 1805 and 1905
(lot 197, FCC, £110), a beautiful set, undervalued in my
view, and of special topicality in this the bicentenary of
Nelson's victory at Trafalgar |

|
Lot 22 |
|
| 1920 to 1940 |
| A trio of sets by Ogden, all from 1926, reminds us of our
sporting heritage from the between-the-wars period - Captains of
Association Football Clubs & Colours (lot 290, £130), Famous
Rugby Players (292, £120) and Derby Entrants (304, £60),
whilst Churchman's Three Jovial Golfers (105, £120), Wills' Golfing
(24 out of 25 in fair to good condition) at lot 104, £110 and
Cope's Boxing Lessons (208, £100) emphasize the popularity of
sports subjects then as now. But this was a time when issuers
selected a wide range of other themes, so we have Player's Clocks
Old & New (lot 36, £95), Faulkner's Our Pets 2nd Series (127,
£70), Kensitas Flowers 1st Series (198, £180), United
Kingdom Tobacco's Beautiful Britain 2nd Series of postcards (344,
£75), and so on. Note also the thirteen Doyle's Beauties at lot 107
(£160). |

|
Lot 290 |
|
| Trade Cards |
| Television has really only come into its own since the
war, and in this sale are several scarce sets which owe their
existence to 1960's TV programmes - Como's Sooty's New Adventures
2nd Series (lot 23, £90), Cadet's UNCLE (Drawings, Scarce)
at lot 121 (£125) and Somportex's Thunderbirds (black &
white) at lot 312 (£170), but I was particularly intrigued to see
lot 278 an unrecorded Rediffusion Set Stars of Television
with the likes of Peter Sellers, Michael Miles, Hughie Green and a
youthful Roger Moore. Terrific! Amongst a strong line-up of other
trade cards are two on railways Cadbury's Locomotives dating
from around 1910 (lot 35, £120) and A & BC's 1958 Railway Quiz
(192, £42). Lots 216 to 239 are all Brooke Bond, including a
set of Bird Portraits, scarce albums, order forms, USA cards,
Place-the-Face, Tak Tik, etc. |

|
Lot 312 |
|
| Rare Individual Cards |
| A Fine selection of rare individual cards begins with
lots 43 to 72 where you will find a Cope's Golfer, Richmond
Cavendish Yacht, a Murray Footballer, a Phillips 1936 Cricket
Fixture Card and two South American Jackie Cooper cards. Amongst
lots 130 to 159 are a Hill's 1912 Footballer, a Cohen Weenen
Cricketer, Clevedon Dan Dare, Mason's Naval & Military and an
extra-large Kesitas Flower. The next batch, from 240 to 264,
includes proof cards, a Zat Card Cricketer, Taddy and an unrecorded
card by Duke USA showing a New York Police Captain. The final group,
lots 315 to 341, has a Will's Waterloo card, Wills'1901 Cricket,
early Barratt Football, inserts, coupons, an unrecorded Van Houten
Fountaines Fables Card, and seven pairs of unusual varieties.
Further information on the three unrecorded lots in this auction can
be found on the "Discoveries" page in the December 2004
Card Collectors News Magazine. |
|
| And Lots More |
| There's more to our auctions than just mainstream
collectibles, as you will see from these less common items - a
decoder for A & BC's Batman (lot 63), Playboy Nudes (77),
packets and wrappers (81 to 87 and 173 to 175), magazines forty or
fifty years old (88/9), a Typhoo promotional watch and camera
(171/2), a London album (179), A & BC World Cup Poster (256), A
& BC Derby County Team Poster (270), a Player's advertising
folder (331), albums with or without cards (349 to 358) a Typhoo
Eddie McCreadie card (359), matchboxes (393 and 403), Ogden's and
Player's proof sets (401/2), die-cuts, foils, etc. for Inkwork's Men
in Black (406-8), Skybox Star Trek Autograph cards (414-16)
and rare promo cards (417-20).
How's that for a choice! Don't get distracted by
Christmas - make sure you get your bids in now so you can relax and
enjoy the festive season.
